Lighter flywheel can cause slower launches -- why? With a lighter flywheel, the engine can rev quicker, because of decreased rotating mass on the drivetrain. But if it can rev quicker, why would it slow your launches? Simple, because it can rev quicker, it can also slow down quicker too. And because of this quick rev and de-rev, per se, it is more difficult to get good launches - you would have to keep the engine revving in the powerband. But with some practice, because of less mass, you should get better launches.
